In the 1940s, as the country was transitioning to a peacetime economy, about 200 employees of Tachikawa Aircraft transferred to the newly established Tokyo Electric Motor Vehicle Co., Ltd. and began developing electric cars. One of the reasons for this was the extreme shortage of gasoline at the time.
