Volvo is synonymous with safety, but unfortunately not all Volvos are created equal. The 2024 XC60 exceeded an overall rating of Pass in the latest side-impact test, missing out on the Top Safety Pick+ award.
The latest test, conducted at 37 miles per hour (60 kilometers per hour) using a barrier weighing 4,200 pounds (1,905 kilograms), was due to potential injuries recorded by the driver and a crash test dummy in the back seat. The overall evaluation ended with a passing result. First, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that for drivers, injuries to the torso and pelvis are possible. As for the passenger who was sitting directly behind the driver, the non-profit emphasizes the possibility of pelvic injury. Because of these results, the 2024 XC60 is awarded Top Safety Pick honors, rather than Top Safety Pick+. It should be said that Volvo’s actions were not wrong. It’s the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety that updated its side-impact tests in 2021, increasing barrier speeds (6 mph) and weight.
